OLD STOCK FROM FEZOUATA NEWLY PROTECTED AREA Restoration details: No reconstructions at all in this specimen. The slab has been slightly hand-prepared to enhance the specimen and to "search" the head and tail that are not present. Dimensions: Please see the scale in the pictures (the preserved section shows around 9 cm). Finding locality: Fezouata Formation, Zagora Region, Anti-Atlas Mountains, Morocco.
Family: Tremaglaspididae; Order: Aglaspidida; Phylum: Arthropoda Geological period: Ordovician, from Paleozoic Era. Description: We present here the main thoracic section of this species.
Internal and external molds (positive/negative parts). Although incomplete, it is a very difficult item to collect and is always a reference in any collection containing items from the now-protected Fezouata Biota. It is also interesting because of its huge size. If complete, this specimen would have at least 15 cm. Aglaspidida is an extinct order of aquatic arthropods that were once regarded as primitive chelicerates.
However, anatomical comparisons demonstrate that the aglaspidids cannot be accommodated within the chelicerates and lie instead within the Artiopoda, thus placing them closer to the trilobites. Aglaspidida contains the subgroups Aglaspididae and Tremaglaspididae, which are distinguished by the presence of acute/spinose genal angles and a long spiniform tail spine in the Aglaspididae. The colors of the specimen (very well preserved) result from replacing the original cuticular substances with ferritic minerals, particularly iron oxides, abundant in this very particular geological layer.

Are poorly painted sculptures of this rare Arthropod. This one is how a real. Should look like: multi-coloured and rarely presents all complete arms/projections - missing parts are common. In this case, a complete negative is also present, a very rare occurrence. Gorgeous red, yellowish and orange colours of the iron oxide of this very particular geological layer are very well preserved. The Fezouata Shale has been compared to the very well know Burgess Shale, at North America. In fact, it is, in late years, a prolific area in fossil discoveries that changed the fossil taxonomy of several groups of organisms and that helped better to understand the evolution of all the life on Earth. Not only several trilobite species have been newly documented there: some other Arthropods (like the famous Anomalocarids), soft-bodied creatures like this. And Echinoderms are other important groups found and studied there, among thousands of species. Besides the intrinsic value of this specimen, as a piece of Natural History, you are acquiring a rare item, whose preparation (in specialized laboratories using micro tools) is a difficult task that takes dozens of hours and needs skills.
Fossils - namely premium items - are, nowadays, also a way of investment as their value will just rise. They are increasingly also being used as decor, and luxury items, taking advantage of the mysterious beauty and framing that they can provide in appropriate spaces. 0-500 g > Europe: 8 EUR /9 USD; Rest of the world 11 EUR /13 USD. 501-100 g > Europe: 13 EUR /15 USD; Rest of the world 19 EUR /21 USD.1-2 kg > Europe: 19 EUR /21 USD; Rest of the world 28 EUR /31 USD.
